Arches by Andy Biggs

Workshop in Moab, Utah
Andy Biggs and I are co-teaching a week-long workshop in Moab Utah. We are headed to the epicenter of red rock country to photograph the arches, balanced rocks and spires of Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. If you have never photographed in the Moab area, you owe it to yourself to witness some of the most famous geological formations in the American West. This is the time of year when the parks are less visited and there is a chance for a light dusting of snow. This workshop will have field instruction, classroom instruction and hands-on digital printing. We will be in the field early in the morning and early in the evening to catch the dawn and dusk light with classroom time in between. We will have discussion and assistance while out in the field each day. Advanced techniques will be constantly discussed, demonstrated and put into practice. We will all work closely together, sharing our knowledge and experience. Feel free to bring samples of your photography for review, as the goal of this workshop is to enjoy the creative process and to grow as image makers.

When: December 4-8 in Moab Utah
Cost: $1495 per person not including travel and meal expenses

Lightroom Web Galleries
If you haven't played with them already, Lightroom 1.3 has some new, built-in gallery templates in the web module that are fantastic. In addition, there is a growing community of people that are developing these templates that can be downloaded, installed and used within lightroom. Tilt Viewer, by Felix Turner at Airtight Interactive is one of the most impressive to date.

While Tilt Viewer can be used for free with Flicker images, Tilt Viewer Pro can be purchased for $95 and integrated into one's own website.

Canon Large Format Printer Support Options
1) The Unofficial Canon ImagePROGRAF Printer Wiki is proving to be an excellent resource for owners of these printers.

2) Canon's direct (800) 423-2366 Wide Format Printer Support line should be the first point of contact with Canon.

3) Canon has recently hired three US large format printer tech reps that can be contacted for demonstrations and for support beyond what the support line can offer. They are:

Scott Jo (West Coast) 949-753-4342 sjo@cusa.canon.com
Kelly Blok (Middle America) 630-250-6201 kblok@cusa.canon.com
Diana Bowe (East Coast) 516-328-4822 dbowe@cusa.canon.com

Industry Tidbits
The free, public Capture One beta 2 is now available from PhaseOne

Hasselblad is rumored to be developing a completely new application that will combine Flextight, Capture One and Lightroom functionality complete with Hasselblad's unique lens specific perspective correction. Although it has been demonstrated behind closed doors, an expected release date has not been announced.

Lots of new and anticipated products are shipping this week including Hahnemuhle's Bamboo and Baryta papers, Epson's Exhibition Fiber paper and K3+VM x880 printers, all of Canon's x100 printers, and Nikon's D300 and D3 cameras.

Version 5.6 of the ColorBurst MacOS RIP is now available as a Universal Binary that runs natively on PPC and Intel Macs, is Leopard compatible and works with the new Epson K3+VM x880 printers. Speed improvements on Intel macs are quite substantial. The upgrade is free for all 5.x users.

InDesign CS3 has a significant bug that prevents it from handling color properly when printing to RGB printer drivers (like inkjet drivers). InDesign CS3 prints way too dark to RGB desktop printers but prints correctly to CMYK devices and devices using a RIP. InDesign CS3 users that print to RGB desktop printers should save their files as PDFs and print via Acrobat Pro or Photoshop until this problem is resolved. You may wish to follow the discussion on the Adobe Forums.
